Man is more than his physical body. He is an eternal spiritual being. Think of his body as an "earth suit". Just as a space suit enables a human being to exist in space, an "earth suit" enables a spirit being to function in the physical realm.
When Jesus said, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you," he was revealing the secret that the "inward parts" of man must be brought into subjection to God's governance. Another word for the Inward is the Heart. Man's heart must bow to his Lordship.
Some place great emphasis on outward conformity to rules and regulations as proof of obedience: modes of dress, dietary restrictions, abstenance from alcohol, observance of holy days...etc. But these behaviors can mask much deeper issues of disobedience in the form of unforgiveness, resentment, envy, lust, greed, unbelief...etc. The real place that must be tamed is the thought-life.
Paul said we must be "casting down vain imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." (2 Cor. 10:5)
